The Loved Ones (2009)

Rejection is hard to deal with. When you’re a teenager, rejection can seem like the end of the world. When you’re a teenager who is also a psychopath, you see rejection as an opportunity for revenge.

This film hails from Australia and was extremely popular when it was released in 2009. It was written and directed by Sean Byrne and stars Xavier Samual, Robin McLeavy, John Brumpton and Victoria Thaine.

Brent is a teenage boy dealing with more than just the standard teenage angst. While driving with his father, he avoids a bloody figure in the road and hits a tree which kills his father. What follows is a series of emotion numbing decisions but there is one good thing in his life, his girlfriend Holly.

When a classmate, Lola, asks Brent to a dance, he declines because he has a girlfriend. Lola sees this is a huge betrayal and decides he will be going as a guest to her own special “dance” which may, or may not, involve torture, lobotomies and paper crowns.  Whether it is the vibrant colors, the amazing acting, or the torture that brings you to this movie, this film is a good addition to a Valentine’s Day horror movie marathon.
