Pee Mak (2013)

Pee Mak is the only Asian film to make our Valentine’s Day horror list. While technically this one is considered to be a horror-comedy, it worked for Shaun of the Dead, so this one stays, too.

You may also recognize this film as one of our additions to The Great Wall of Horror, which covers some of the best Asian films from across the continent. Pee Mak is one of the top grossing Thai films of all time and centers on the love of a husband and wife and what could happen if one of them may, or may not, be a ghost.

It is based on an old Thai legend of a man who went to war and survived. When he returns home to his wife and child, he learns that he has been living with a ghost and they both died while he was away. While this injects a heavy dose of slapstick comedy, it will still hit you hard with the feels.  This is a great one that is tear-jerking but more lighthearted to break up all of the pools of blood and torture. It’s another well-rounded Valentine’s Day horror film.

Pee Mak was directed by Banjong Pisanthanakum and stars Mario Maurer and Davika Hoorne.
