The Addams Family teaser trailer: Not your average American family

The Addams Family are back with an animated movie, and the first teaser trailer has finally arrived.

The Addams Family are part of every horror fan’s life, one way or another. Some watched the original 1964 TV series with John Astin and Carolyn Jones, others became aware of them with the 1991 movie adaptation with Raúl Juliá and Anjelica Huston – whatever the case, this very peculiar family has left an impact on many generations since its creation.

The last time these characters were adapted to any format was in 1998 with the direct-to-video movie Addams Family Reunion, starring Tim Curry and Daryl Hannah (hey, it’s totally ok if you don’t remember this one, it didn’t do well). Now, these characters are ready for a comeback, though not in a live-action movie as many would have wanted. After all, 3D animation is the future, right?

Simply titled The Addams Family, it’s a 3D computer-animated comedy horror movie directed by Conrad Vernon (Monsters vs Aliens) and Greg Tiernan (Sausage Party, along with Vernon), and produced by MGM Pictures. The voice cast includes Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester, and Bette Midler as Grandmama.

The movie will follow the Addams as they face-off against a treacherous reality-TV host (voiced by Allison Janney), while they also prepare for the arrival of their extended family for a big celebration. Now, the studio has released the first teaser trailer, which tells us absolutely nothing about the story, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth watching.

The trailer (see below) shows Gomez and Morticia as they arrive at a new, possibly haunted house, that is “perfect” for them (of course it is). What follows are glimpses of their far-from normal life and habits, such as Wednesday’s electric chair, an extreme “Battleship” game, and Pugsley casually hanging upside down from a tree. It also features a reference to Stephen King’s IT when Wednesday arrives with a red balloon. Trust me, this teaser is worth the watch.

Fans all over the web have been campaigning for years now for a new Addams Family adaptation with Oscar Isaac playing Gomez. Well, it’s now a reality, though not in the way they wanted. While this first teaser has brought a nice amount of nostalgia to many fans (me included), others are not happy with it, mainly with the animation.

Yes, it’s not Pixar, but did you really expect a “normal” or “traditional” look for the Addams? In that case, you might not be getting the message of these characters.

The previous Addams Family movies have not been well received by critics, but the big difference here (at least from my perspective) is that, as an animated movie, it can be as ridiculous or outrageous as the directors want. It’s all for fun, and who doesn’t want some fun with a hint of horror?

The Addams Family will be released on October 11. Here’s to hoping some future trailers will showcase the story.
