Shudder snags breakthrough horror film Tigers Are Not Afraid
By Mads Lennon
Shudder secured the rights to revolutionary horror film, the formerly undistributed, Tigers Are Not Afraid. It will be available to stream later this year.
In today’s big horror news, Issa Lopez’s Tigers Are Not Afraid, has been bought by Shudder. This is fantastic news for genre fans.
The fact that this film hasn’t been distributed before now, despite playing in more than ten different film festivals and being praised by genre heavyweights like Stephen King and Guillermo Del Toro, is pretty crazy. But now Shudder has acquired all the rights to the internationally acclaimed film.
Tigers Are Not Afraid is being labeled a “dark fairytale” and something akin to a Del Toro film with the same kind of fantastical elements the director is known for. It tells the story of five orphaned children attempting to survive in a world torn asunder by the violence of drug cartels. In the process, we are taken on a hideous, yet wondrous journey inhabited by ghosts created by the war.
In the press release for the recent acquisition, Shudder’s GM, Craig Engler, had this to say about the film:
"Tigers Are Not Afraid is a horror fable for the ages, as moving as it is frightening thanks to Issa’s fearless imagination. We are honored and excited to share this powerful film with our members."
Issa Lopez, the mastermind behind the film, has been making quite a name for herself. She has already secured Del Toro’s approval. He will even be executive producing one of her upcoming new projects.
As for Stephen King’s glowing praise, he had this to say about the much-anticipated film:
Tigers Are Not Afraid had its premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, from there it went on to pick up more than thirty different awards around the world.
Shudder has earned its reputation as being one of the best streaming sites around at the moment, particularly for genre-fare. It is insinuating itself into the conversation by providing a platform for a diverse array of storytellers within the horror genre.
Their recent Shudder Originals and Exclusives demonstrate their dedication to providing an essential service for horror fans along with exposing them to films that may have been overlooked otherwise.
I hope the service continues to break new ground and establish itself as a must-have addition to any fan’s streaming line-up. Shudder’s growth is certainly on the upward climb.
Currently, there is no release date set for Tigers Are Not Afraid but it will be available on the streaming service sometime later this year.
