School’s out, the sun is shining, and the season is ripe for campfires, road trips and summer bonanzas. It also means it’s time to deliver some serious scares to unsuspecting kids with the 15 scariest summer horror movies of all-time!

When we think of something that takes place in horror movies, it isn’t something that basks in the shine of the sun, is it? Horror movies largely thrives on scaring audiences with something that is next-to-impossible to understand and often that “thing” or person lurks in the shadows. After all, what good is committing an act of terror if the bright of day is there to give away your position?

That’s why summer is such a revered season, at least among the current generation of kids, teens, and young adults. It represents not only a sliver of freedom from school responsibilities, but a feeling of warmth and safety that is not present in the type of horror movies that rely on the dark to scare people. But much like the other seasons, summer is no stranger to the world of horror, as plenty of horror movies have used the hot summer weather to their sinister advantages.

These horror movies not only take place in or near the summer season, but they relish every moment of it. Every muggy and bug-filled moment in the sun is just another opportunity for the film to introduce something potentially terrifying. These 15 horror movies are far from the only horrors to take place in bright and sunny weather, but the ones listed are of the breed that manage to stand out with the likes of interesting concepts, appropriate set locations, etc.

Some of these horror movies are a little more funny than scary and others are plain old cynical and graphic. Either way, these movies introduce ideas about summer and nice, sunny weather that can make one completely rethink how they should spend their time in the summer.

Enjoy!
