15. Escape from Tomorrow (2013)

Directed by Randy Moore

This one may be controversial, but I have to talk about it to start us off.

It’s no secret that Randy Moore’s ambitious guerrilla feature, Escape from Tomorrow, has an incredibly mixed reception and it isn’t completely unwarranted. Moore’s decision to film his movie at Disney World without the Mouse’s permission led to the film’s limited-feeling nature. Moore couldn’t go too crazy at Disney World without drawing attention, so that restricted feel combined with a surreal and largely confusing narrative made for a movie that could’ve been so much better.

That being said, Escape from Tomorrow gets a spot on the list simply for its setting and atmosphere. Disney has already been the subject of numerous creepypastas over the years and their secretive nature certainly doesn’t help combat that. Moore takes advantage of this by creating a unique horror experience inside what is often called “the happiest place on Earth.”

Summertime is the perfect time to go on vacation with your family and what better place to vacation than at Disney World? It’s the perfect place to help take your mind off of work and responsibilities and the hot summer weather gives it the appropriate summer feel. But when a family vacation turns grim in Escape from Tomorrow, summer fun is the last thing on anyone’s minds. It’s unpolished and rough, but it is a uniquely unnerving summer horror feature on its own.
