13. Sleepaway Camp (1983)

Directed by Robert Hiltzik

Ah, one of the classic cult horror movies of the 1980s. Sleepaway Camp is a movie that has both aged horribly and amazingly, holding up in the entertainment factor quite well as the years have passed. The movie is not known for its originality, riffing on popular slashers at the time like the Friday the 13th series and Halloween, but the execution of its kills and scares has garnered the film a considerably large cult following that has spawned sequel after sequel.

It’s also one of the perfect summer horror movies to throw on if you’re feeling particularly festive in the summer. The movie embraces the heat of the summer by having the main character, Angela, stay at a summer camp with her brother Ricky eight years after a family tragedy leaves Angela to stay with her aunt. Once stationed at the camp, a series of unusual incidents quickly spiral into a murder spree as the camp is terrorized by a killer hellbent on exacting their own brand of dark justice towards the bullies of the camp.

The film’s summer vibes are tainted by several gruesome horror sequences and kills that would make Jason Voorhees heave in disgust.

Even if the movie itself hasn’t aged well in the acting department, the concept of someone from the camp itself committing all these murders is arguably more terrifying than some goomba with a hockey mask. It all leads to one of the most famous horror endings in the history of horror movies and served as a benchmark on how to deliver an unexpected twist. Eat your heart out, M. Night.
