Horror heat: Here’s the hot terror streaming in June

facebooktwitterreddit

Amazon Prime and Hulu are dominating the streaming horror game in June, leaving Netflix in the dust. While Netflix only added two horror flicks to their service, the competition has pretty solid lineups.

Amazon Prime:

An American Werewolf in London – What’s not to love about this 1981 classic? It’s got comedy, true horror, ground-breaking makeup effects by the great Rick Baker, and characters you care about (primarily David Naughton’s).

David and Jack take a backpacking trip to England, and are attacked by a werewolf on the moors. Jack is killed, and returns as a decomposing ghost to warn the injured David of what his future will hold.

Sleepy Hollow – Tim Burton directed this gorgeously filmed version of Washington Irving’s classic story. Johnny Depp stars as Police Constable Ichabod Crane, sent to Sleepy Hollow to dig into a series of murders committed by what is described as a headless horseman.

The Silence of the Lambs – Although classified as a “Psychological Thriller”, make no mistake, this is as horror as horror gets. Anthony Hopkins plays Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist turned serial killer, who was prone to cannibalism. While investigating a serial killer known as Buffalo Bill, young FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodi Foster) interviews Lecter, hoping to get his help.

Blood Moon Rising – A comic book fanatic and a hippie chick work together to defeat vampires, zombies and werewolves (oh my!). Blood Moon Rising features the acting talents of Laurie Love (Rottentail) and porn star Ron Jeremy.

Blood Reaper – A group of seven friends go camping in the woods (naturally), despite the legend of an escaped lunatic who commits murder during each full moon of a leap year. I’ll bet you can’t guess what happens.

Curse of the Zodiac – This flick was inspired by the real-life hunt for the killer known as Zodiac. An internet search for this film turned up a lot of really bad reviews, with comedy website Something Awful giving it a “nearly perfect” score of -49 / -50.

Frankenstein Reborn – Baron Frankenstein lives on a remote island close to Botswana, where he does scientific research. Apparently, cousin Victor’s monster is immune to the deadly virus he releases.

The Ghost Bride – In this Chinese horror film, Mayen has to decide whether or not to accept an unusual business proposal known as the Ghost Wedding. Doing so will provide wealth and prosperity for her loved ones…or will it?

More from Streaming

Little Red Devil – Daniel Baldwin, James Russo and Dee Wallace appear in this one. Jimmy Lidell’s girlfriend has disappeared, and a search for her has thrown him in with an underworld boss who wants to teach him “the business.”

Mansion of Blood – A millionaire completing renovations on a mansion throws a celebration party during a lunar eclipse. When a young woman chooses the occasion to summon her dead boyfriend, something goes horribly wrong. Gary Busey appears, although he was reportedly fired during filming.

Prey for the Beast – In what sounds like a truly original script (please read that line in a sarcastic tone of voice), a group of men go camping in the woods, where they meet a group of hot women doing the same. Soon, all are hunted by a predatory creature.

Hulu:

Into the Dark: They Come Knocking – Hulu’s yearlong anthology series honors Father’s Day this month. After his wife dies, a father takes his two daughters camping via travel trailer, and are hunted by someone or something. When will people learn that camping in a remote area is an invitation to disaster???

American Psycho – Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho stars Christian Bale and Willem Dafoe. Bale’s Patrick Bateman is a well-to-do investment banking exec in NYC, and begins to experience violent fantasies.

The Burbs – Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) starts to suspect that his new neighbors are murderers (or worse), and soon convinces fellow neighbors that his suspicions may be valid. This 1989 cult classic also stars Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher.

The Crazies – George Romero was an executive producer for this remake of his 1973 film. A town in Iowa becomes infected by a virus that turns its victims into crazed killers.  The Crazies stars Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell.

Friday the 13th – See the original, here in all of its bloody glory! See Kevin Bacon get speared from beneath a bed! See Bing Crosby’s son get an arrow in the eyeball! In my humble opinion, this is the only Friday the 13th movie worth seeing more than once.

Hulu is also streaming Friday the 13th II, III, IV: The Final Chapter, V: A New Beginning, VI: Jason Lives, VII: The New Blood, and VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.

Night of the Living Dead 3D – In this “reimagining” of the 1968 classic zombie film, survivors trapped in a farmhouse must fight off hordes of the undead. But this time, the blood and guts are in 3D!

Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection – A family living in the Welsh countryside when the zombie apocalypse hits must fight off hordes of the undead (sounds familiar).

Netflix:

new horror offerings are few this month, which is disappointing. They usually lead the pack.

Carrie – The original is still the best. Sissy Spacek plays Carrie White, a shy, bullied teenager living with her overly religious mother. When a popular boy invites her to the prom, Carrie becomes the victim of a cruel prank, and uses her telekinetic powers to get revenge.

The Golem – When a plague hits her community, a woman attempts to conjure a protective entity. Unfortunately, the entity she manages to conjure turns out to be evil.

dark. Next. David Lynch getting honorary Oscar
