7. Ma (May 31)

This summer horror movie came out over Memorial Day weekend. While it didn’t receive all of the hype of some of the others on this list did, I have heard nothing but great things about it. Not only is the premise new and interesting, but it stars the amazing Octavia Spencer wearing the sexiest of all bedazzled sexy hats.

Ma was written by Scotty Landes and directed by Tate Taylor. Ma not only stars Spender, but it also features Juliette Lewis — which is a surprise because we haven’t seen her in films for a while.

The film follows a sad and lonely woman with intense social issues. One day, she befriends a group of party-loving teens and intertwines her way into their group.

After becoming obsessed with her new friends (and feeling the opposition from their parents) she offers up her house to use for a party. As dumb and trusting teens, they jump on the chance. It turns out there is more to her invite than just house party charity as strange things begin to happen.

This horror film falls more into the revenge psychological thriller sub genre of horror and I am all about those.
