As the 40th anniversary of the start of “The Amityville Horror” draws closer, we take at 15 of the best and most interesting films int he franchise.

There are some stories that everybody knows. There are stories that incite fear and goosebumps with the name alone. One of those names is Amityville. Everyone knows the “true” story of The Amityville Horror and the gruesome true crime at the heart of it all.

Whether you have seen the original film, the remake, the sequels or the documentary, there is a pretty good chance that you have seen something that the Amityville Horror franchise has to offer. There has been an entire franchise based off of the mysterious case of the DeFeo murders, which is more intriguing at times then the haunting afterward.

In case you didn’t know, the story begins after the Lutz family moves into a home where, a year earlier, an entire family was shot to death by the oldest son, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. While the killings aren’t the supernatural occurrences that the legend claims, the fact that all family members were found face down in their beds still holds a lot of mystery as how that could happen. After the murders, the Lutz family moved into the house and claimed to experience paranormal activity so badly, it drove them out of their new home in less than a month.

This July, the Amityville Horror franchise turns a whopping 40 and it is still producing an influencing movies to this day. No matter how you feel about the “truth” of the story, the conspiracies behind the DeFeo murders, the legitimacy of the Warrens or the haunting itself, you cannot deny that it has created one hell of a last story.
