2. The Amityville Horror (2005)

I know there are many that would dispute the 2005 remake to be in second place, but I remain firm on this choice. This film was scary, stayed pretty true to the original story, had moments that tugged on your heartstrings and had Ryan Reynolds with a beard and no shirt on. You should count your lucky stars that I didn’t put this in the number one spot for that reason alone.

This Amityville Horror film starred Ryan Reynolds as George Lutz, Melissa George as Kathy Lutz, Brendan Donaldson as Ronald DeFeo,  Isabel Conner as Jodie DeFeo and Jesse James, Jimmy Bennett, and Chloë Grace Moretz as George and Kathy’s children. This version has a screenplay by Scott Kosar and directed by Andrew Douglas.

This version included a graphic depiction of the DeFeo murders and a more intense showing of the darkness that begins to take hold of George Lutz. This remake is a darker film overall and has some changes to the legend as well. It still works to have a 70’s feeling and Ryan Reynolds really showed that he can do serious roles with this film (and continued to show us with the heart wrenching film Buried in 2010). I think if people stop comparing this film to the original, they would enjoy it a whole lot more.
