1. The Amityville Horror (1979)

This one is no surprise. It is the film that started it all. Whether this story was real or not doesn’t take away from the film itself. This film came out FAST. The book written by Jay Anson was released in 1977 and The Amityville Horror was released in 1979. That is some quick movie making and it is widely considered to be the best.

The Amityville Horror stars James Brolin as George Lutz, Margot Kidder as Kathy Lutz, Rod Steiger as Father DeLaney, and Don Stroud as Father Bolen. It also stars Natasha Ryan, K.C. Martel, Meeno Peluce, Michael Sacks, Helen Shaver, Murray Hamilton, and John Larch. Sandor Stern wrote the screenplay based off of the Jay Anson novel and it was directed by Stuart Rosenberg.

Despite how quickly this movie game out after the release of the book, it is a scary journey that you take with the Lutz family. This one stays the most true to the story that inspired the book and laid the foundation of the legend that all subsequent movies based themselves on. James Brolin did an amazing job as a man who was being influenced by darkness as he begins to spiral due to the same alleged dark forces that caused Ronald DeFeo, Jr. to murder his entire family.
