2. Suspiria (2018)
Dance your heart out at the Markos Dance Academy in Luca Guadagnino’s spell-binding remake of the acclaimed 1977 film of the same name. Or perhaps don’t, since an ancient coven of witches runs the place.
Dakota Johnson stars as newcomer Susie Bannion, an immediate sensation at the school. Johnson is only part of the reason this remake claims such a high spot on this list. Guadagnino’s vision a lengthy film with an overt admiration of the grotesque.
The movie takes obvious inspiration but the original and then subverts your expectations. Body horror is a staple in this film compared to the original, particularly as it pertains to the art of dance, a craft that was surprisingly minimal in the 1977 version despite the storyline.
Creating a great remake involves more than merely retelling the same story. It needs to change the variables and find a different way of conveying similar themes. Suspiria (2018) luxuriates in deconstructing motherhood through the lens of homoeroticism and power imbalances. While the original film basks in a shocking palette of red, the remake prefers to lurk in the shadows of beige and brown.
Guadagnino manages to retain the spirit of the original while becoming far more confrontational with its themes. With Suspiria’s intoxicating tale of female empowerment, it’s as timely as ever.
