Evil Dead, It and the 15 greatest horror movie remakes of all-time
By Mads Lennon
13. The Grudge (2004)
I remember when The Grudge debuted in theaters. I was in middle school and it was a huge deal at the time. It was the movie everyone was talking about and everyone was terrified of. It took me a long time to work up the courage to finally watch The Grudge.
It is considered one of the best horror movie remakes out there, alongside another Japanese horror movie remake, The Ring. The Grudge is based on Ju-on: The Grudge. Despite the remake being well-received, Hollywood intends to remake the American remake soon.
Perhaps the new iteration on The Grudge will wind up on a list like this someday! But for now, I’ll take a minute to appreciate the spine-tingling 2004 film.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s performance as caretaker, Karen Davis, is one of the most appealing elements of the film. Gellar’s emotional performance makes the terror of an entity born out of rage all the more horrific.
Because of The Grudge’s success (it grossed almost $200 million at the box office), it kick-started a trend of American remakes of Japanese films. It has had a lasting effect on pop culture.
You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t have a visceral reaction to that ungodly croaking sound.
