9. Piranha 3D (2010)

Piranha 3D is the rare remake that understands its premise better than its predecessor. The original Piranha, while not a terrible film, never reached its potential in the B-movie horror category.

Piranha has always been a schlocky Jaws rip-off, which was part of its charm. Piranha 3D is unabashedly trashy, gory, camp. It eludes the tone of self-serious summer blockbusters and completely embraces the spirit of what a B-movie should be.

Alexandre Aja understands Piranha’s origins, as is made evident by frequent nods to Jaws. All of Piranha 3D feels like an in-joke that the audience gets to be a part of, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable.

At the end of the day, Piranha is a film about killer fish. Piranha 3D never pretends to be anything else. It gives us the movie we always wanted Piranha to be, a bunch of gorgeous spring breakers becoming fish food for piranhas in a bloody fantastic mess.

The genius of Aja’s film is that it never pretends to be anything other than precisely what it is. We don’t need to care about the characters or the story. We just have to sit back and let Piranha 3D do its thing, which is to enjoy a film with gratuitous amounts of sex, nudity, gore, and unlikable characters getting their just deserts.
