Must We Revisit Every Franchise?

1428 Elm: Speaking of not being able to tell stories, what are your thoughts on all of these franchise reboots? Yes, Halloween did well at the box office but now, Blumhouse is talking about reviving Friday the 13th down the road. Do you feel we need to do this and if it does happen, would you be interested in revisiting a new incarnation?

Adam Marcus: I get the money grab of it all. I understand it. I think people are going to look back on the recent Halloween and they are not going to look back on it kindly. The filmmakers involved are amazing, they are terrific.

I come from the school of thought that if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything. Quite frankly, I have nothing to say about Halloween 2018. Truly nothing to say.

I understand the business model. I see every horror movie that comes out. I appreciate people that are trying to do original material and do something new. I am even okay with connected universe material.

What they were doing with Ash vs Evil Dead on STARZ was terrific, fun and clever and let’s take it in a different direction. There are franchises that have life in them that have not been explored.

I think Phantasm could be re-explored in a bigger budget way. I think Hellraiser should be re-explored in the same way. There are things out there that deserve to re-examined.

Do I think that serial killer franchises are great revisited over and over and over again? Not really and this is coming from someone who did Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw 3D. I think you have to have something new to say.

It is insulting to the fanbase to keep feeding them the same regurgitated nonsense. Jason taking a boat ride in Part 8 frankly made me mad. I was sitting in the theater going, “This is the movie? This is it?”

After Parts 6 and 7 where we were doing something cool and then we’re getting this? So, for me, I am not a fan of the reboot of Friday the 13th. I don’t know a lot of people who are. I am not a fan of the reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street even though I think Jackie Earle Haley is a national treasure.

You need to have something new to say. Look at how people reacted to the last Godzilla movie. It’s not affecting people the way they want it to. When Rob Zombie did his version of Halloween, it was a big success so they made Halloween 2 and then people were like wait a minute, what is this?
