Chris Rock’s Saw movie rescheduled to summer 2020

The Saw franchise is far from over, and we won’t have to wait until October 2020 for the latest installment in the saga. Turns out, it will hit theaters in the summer!

It sounds like something you heard or read in a weird dream, but it’s 100% real: there’s a new Saw movie in the works, and it’s all thanks to Chris Rock, who came up with the idea that made the studio go, “Alright, let’s go!”.

Yes, that Chris Rock. No, it’s not a joke.

The last movie in the saga, titled Jigsaw, was released in 2017, and revived the franchise after the supposed final chapter, Saw 3D (or literally Saw: The Final Chapter). Even though we should have seen another movie coming, the big surprise is that it was Chris Rock who convinced Lionsgate’s executives to make it happen. Anyway, putting the shock aside, Lionsgate decided to change the release date for the new Saw movie, so we won’t have to wait too long.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures moved up the ninth Saw movie from October 23, 2020, to May 15, 2020. With Halloween Kills set for an October 16, 2020 release, it’s possible that Lionsgate decided to change the date to avoid competition.

More from Horror Movies

Production on Saw IX (working title: The Organ Donor) (yeah, I know) has already started, starring Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols, with Darren Lynn Bousman back as director.

Now, reading “Saw” and “Chris Rock” in the same sentence feels weird and can make some believe that the franchise is taking a comedic turn or that the movie will not be canon and is just a parody of sorts (spoiler: it’s not and it’s 100% canon), but Rock happens to be a big fan of the franchise and if the recent Halloween reboot taught us anything, comedy actors can be really good at writing horror movies. Let’s not forget that Danny McBride was one of the writers of the latest incarnation of Halloween.

Luckily, we only have to wait until next summer to see what Rock and company are working on. Well, actually a bit less than that if we count the trailer. Let’s give it the benefit of the doubt – who knows, it might start a whole new era of Saw movies.

Next. Classic horror movies that need a Halloween style reboot. dark

Saw IX is now scheduled for a May 15, 2020 release. Shall we bet on how different the official title will be to The Organ Donor, or if it will stay as Saw IX?
