James Wan is going back to his horror roots with his latest project, teasing an R-rated movie with practical effects… and we have some ideas.

Ah, James Wan. The man behind Insidious, The Conjuring, and one half of the genius that turned a short film into the Saw franchise. Wan’s most recent work as director was DC’s Aquaman, and before he goes back to the (underwater) superhero world, he will come back home with a new horror movie for New Line.

Details are a mystery, but the still untitled project is said to begin production next year, and Wan and company are already in the process of location scouting. Because he is a good man who knows his fans are more than excited about his return to horror, he decided to share some photos of the locations we might see in this new movie.

Via his Instagram account, Wan shared six photos (although a bit vague) of locations for his new project. He also shared that he’s excited to go back to his indie roots with “this hard-R thriller”, adding that it’s an “original horror idea”, but the most exciting part is that it will have practical effects.

No, it’s not going to be a Silent Hill movie. No, it’s not a Nightmare on Elm Street remake/reboot either. And no, there won’t be CGI effects.

What can we make out of this? Honestly, not much beyond the vibe we get from these photos. The R-rated and “back to his roots” parts immediately take us back to Saw, and that second pic certainly gives us that vibe – some body horror, torture/gore stuff might take place there. Add the previously mentioned practical effects and this setting is suddenly a very exciting one, just for the creativity and mastery we might witness. There’s nothing wrong with CGI but no amount of technology will ever capture the magic of practical effects.

"Interesting things you see whilst location scouting. There’s been a bit of speculation as to what my next project is… all I’ll say is, I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets. That’s all I’ll say for now.29.5k Likes, 612 Comments – James Wan (@creepypuppet) on Instagram: “Interesting things you see whilst location scouting. There’s been a bit of speculation as to what…”"

Anyway, back to the photos, there’s an underground atmosphere going on as well, but the mannequins and the fancy room with a piano are some very interesting details. Could we meet a super controlling, obsessed villain?

Think of a very rich person who likes to release stress or whatever darkness and twist stuff he has going on in his head on other people. A bit of a Hostel vibe but not the concept as it is.

Unlike slashers who sometimes take their horrors to the outside, where people can witness the madness, this gives the idea of a more calculating killer who likes to be in full control of his actions and does his best to hide them, possibly in plain sight. But hey, that’s just what we can make of the pics and James Wan’s message for now!

dark. Next. The Conjuring 3: Is the Arne Cheyenne Johnson case next?

Of course, possibilities are endless and this is just a small taste of what’s to come. Wan’s imagination is limitless, and he will surely surprise us with what he’s planning for this new movie.
