Many thought Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was lost to the black hole where unfinished scripts go, but an adaptation is finally on its way!

Originally, the legendary George A. Romero was going to direct an adaptation of one of Stephen King’s lesser-known books, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. Sadly, when Romero passed away, the script was buried in the Hollywood abyss.

But now, per The Hollywood Reporter, Romero’s wife, Chris Romero, will be teaming up with the producers behind King’s latest big-screen hit, It, to bring Tom Gordon to life.

If you haven’t read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, I recommend it. It’s not the typical King-brand of horror. The book is far more psychological than we’re used to and has been branded as such.

“I’m thrilled that my book is being brought to the screen, and that George’s company is involved. Chris has worked long and hard to make this project happen,” said King in a statement.

It follows Trisha McFarland, a 9-year-old girl who gets lost in the Appalachian forest while she’s out on a hike with her mother and brother.

Alone, afraid, and with only a few resources to keep her alive, Trisha is left stranded as she tries to survive in the woods for more than a week.

While on her journey, she begins to believe she is being stalked by a mysterious creature known as The God of the Lost. But she does have one thing to keep her company, her idol, a baseball player known as Tom Gordon who keeps her company in her hallucinatory state.

Because the film is in its earliest stages of production, it’s hard to say who will wind up writing or directing the script. It is my hope this movie will have a female director.

Beyond that, I’m curious to see who will be cast. When the idea for this film was initially tossed around, Dakota Fanning was one of the names tossed out for consideration, but she may be too old for the part now unless they age Trisha up some.

Personally, I would rather see a younger, newer actress get the chance at a juicy role like Trisha’s. I think Lulu Wilson or Abby Ryder Forston would be a great pick. Wilson is already a bonafide horror icon at only 13 with her roles in The Haunting of Hill House, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and Annabelle: Creation. She’s extremely talented and can hold her weight on-screen even in the most difficult of scenes.

Forston is best-known for her role as the adorable Cassie Lang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But again, she’s talented. She hasn’t done much in the way of horror but she did appear on the sci-fi series, The Whispers and she’s a little younger than Wilson,  at 11, which would help if they want to maintain Trisha’s young age.

For the role of Tom Gordon, who is based on the real-life Boston pitcher, I think Trevante Rhodes would be perfect for the role. We already know he’s an excellent actor from his stellar work in Moonlight, and he’s dabbled in the psychological horror genre already with last year’s film, Bird Box.
