John Carpenter: Should the franchise continue after Halloween Ends?
Halloween director John Carpenter appeared at Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia this weekend. During a panel discussion he stated that the latest Halloween franchise reboot won’t be ending anytime soon. Is this a great idea?
John Carpenter was in attendance at Keystone Comic Con this past weekend when he was asked about the future of the Halloween franchise. According to The Wrap, the iconic director believes that Michael Myers’ saga will not end with Halloween Ends in 2021.
In fact, he believes as long as the box office returns are profitable then the stories will continue.
Which considering the way Hollywood functions isn’t really shocking. But, is it wise?
Sure, it will make the studios money because Halloween 2018, garnered over $255 M worldwide. Considering the fact that it had a production budget of $10 M, you can see that it is set up to be a cash cow for Blumhouse Productions.
Of course, Carpenter has been around the block a time or two. He is an established and respected director within the genre so he knows what he is talking about and it only makes sense that he would want to see his legacy continue.

Interesting to note, David Gordon Green who helmed the first successful film in the rebooted franchise and who is on board to direct the sequels slated for next year and 2021 has different thoughts on the possibility of an extended universe.
Green had this to say to Indie Wire:
"“The fun of it is also seeing it end, and knowing that it can. If you just keep trying to elongate it and milk it for all of the money, then that’s boring,”"
He has a valid point. Audiences attention spans are notoriously mercurial. If Halloween Kills doesn’t live up to Halloween 2018, (which did have its detractors) will that hurt the box office performance of Halloween Ends?
Is it necessary to continue the franchise beyond that movie? How do you keep it fresh and interesting? Furthermore, Jamie Lee Curtis emphasized the fact that she would only do a sequel if Green was returning. We know he is done after the third installment, so it might be unlikely that she would continue in future iterations as Laurie Strode.
Fans love their icons and if Jamie Lee doesn’t return, will they accept new characters? Honestly, what hasn’t the Michael Myers universe explored?
Only time will tell if John Carpenter’s vision continues for future movie going generations to enjoy.
