A new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie is in development thanks to Legendary and Fede Álvarez, who is serving as producer.

The reboot trend continues and no titles are safe, not even classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it seems to be in good hands – Fede Álvarez’s hands to be exact. After the 2017 prequel Leatherface failed to revive the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, the rights went back to Kim Henkel, co-writer of the first movie and writer and director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. Legendary had been interested in acquiring the rights to it, and it looks like they finally got it.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Legendary has closed a deal and is ready to begin developing a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. Tobe Hooper’s original movie has spawned seven (yes, seven!) more entries, including sequels, prequels, and remakes. The horror genre is going through a very good run with both original content and remakes/reboots that have been surprisingly good – and I say “surprising” because, let’s be real, it’s hard for a horror remake to truly be good. That said, this might be the perfect time for Leatherface to (successfully) come back, and the project has Fede Álvarez on board as producer.

This new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, which is said to follow Blumhouse’s Halloween pattern will be a direct sequel to the first movie. It’s not that the sequels are so bad they should be ignored, but most of us can agree that the franchise needs a fresh start, and this might be the best move for that. Still, the project is in the earliest stages of pre-production, so this plan could change anytime. It’s worth noting that, although Álvarez will produce, he’s not being considered to direct.

Fede Álvarez was the writer and director of the 2013 Evil Dead remake as well as the horror thriller Don’t Breathe. He recently directed The Girl In The Spider’s Web, the adaptation of David Lagercrantz’s book of the same name and part of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy (you know, the one that began with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). Legendary’s most notable horror-related movies are Crimson Peak and Krampus, so if this new Texas Chainsaw Massacre goes as we all hope (that is: incredible), it could be a big boost not only for the franchise but the studio as well.

If they do decide to make this movie a direct sequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there are a lot of creative paths they can take, but the most important question probably is: Will Leatherface’s mask be the same after all these years? Or has it changed? We’ll have to wait, very patiently, to learn this and many more details.
