3. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

  • Directed by: George A. Romero
  • Starring: David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross

Dawn of the Dead (1978) was further proof that basically everything George A. Romero touched would turn into horror gold. Dawn of the Dead was a follow-up to Night of the Living Dead, which went on to become a prolific horror franchise in its own right.

Dawn of the Dead also received a surprisingly successful remake in 2004 but the original still stands out as the best and one of the greatest horror sequels.

Starting new, without any of the characters from the previous film, Dawn of the Dead follows yet another zombie outbreak from an unidentified source. The survivors find themselves barricaded inside of a shopping mall while all the zombies congregate around the doors.

Not only is it a fantastic sequel, but many consider it one of the best zombie movies ever made. The film has a high score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

One of the reasons the movie was so good is due to its usage of excellent special effects. Romero is well-known for creating awesome visuals with practical effects and you’ll certainly notice that in this movie. It also broadens the world introduced in Night of the Living Dead, making the stakes feel even higher.
