13. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

  • Directed by: Tommy Lee Wallace
  • Starring: Tom Atkins, Stacey Nelkin, and Dan O’Herlihy

Halloween III was a strange entry into the early Halloween franchise. It is the only movie in the entire series to not actually feature Michael Meyers. It also fictionalizes the previous two movies in the franchise so it can exist in its own canon.

Upon its initial release, Halloween III was met with distaste by many of the franchise’s most ardent fans. They were supremely upset by the fact Michael Meyers wasn’t in his own movie.

In fact, Halloween III wasn’t even a traditional slasher, instead, it focused more on witchcraft and science fiction. But over the years, people have begun to respect and even enjoy the film more. Halloween III: Season of the Witch has a pretty obsessive cult following these days.

Even John Carpenter though the movie had the potential to branch out into its own anthology, so it wasn’t as if everyone hated it. Another reason some fans didn’t like the movie is that it tones down the gore.

However, some of the sequences are still equally frightening and disturbing, even if they don’t contain as much hardcore violence. If you haven’t seen this movie in a few years, I recommend you give it a second chance.
