9. Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

  • Directed by: Christopher Landon
  • Starring: Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Suraj Sharma, and Steve Zissis

The first Happy Death Day was a refreshing take on the time-loop trope, particularly by introducing it into the horror world and concocting a new slasher to go along with it. It was well-received by critics and audiences alike.

Happy Death Day 2U, released earlier this year, didn’t receive quite the same amount of praise as the original but still, as far as sequels go it was pretty great. Although it should definitely be noted that the sequel was a little more science-fiction than it was horror.

But the tonal shift helped to make this movie more original rather than following the exact same formula as the first movie. Jessica Rothe shines as the lead character once again.

The movie begins with Tree Gelbman (Rothe) waking up in the same parallel universe she was stuck in before. Except for this time, things are totally different from her normal world. Everyone is a different version of themselves.

Tree soon learns that her boyfriend’s roommate has been messing with time and this causes Tree to become the target of a masked killer. History really does repeat, doesn’t it?

Given the success of this film, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if Blumhouse decides to make a third one.
