For the sixth day of October, we are focusing on another less-intense film, which is not gory or action-packed, and is acceptable for older kids who do not scare easily. Despite all of that, it is still a film that gives me the shivers, and it is a gorgeous treat for the eyes.

Something Wicked This Way Comes was originally written as a screenplay by Ray Bradbury in 1958, but it was shelved due to lack of financing, and Bradbury released it as a novel instead. Given its theme and setting, it’s a perfect movie to watch in October.

Walt Disney Pictures released this dark themed film in 1983, in an effort to branch out from their typical family animation features. Though author Bradbury wanted Christopher Lee to play the role of Mr. Dark, Jonathon Pryce was cast instead to save money, and he did a fine job in the role.

Something Wicked This Way Comes is set in a small town in Illinois, where young Will Halloway and his rebellious pal Jim Nightshade reside. When the boys hear that Mr. Dark’s Pandemonium Carnival is coming to town, Will is reluctant to attend at first, but his more adventurous friend convinces him to go.

As the boys soon find out, this is no mere fun carnival, something much more ominous is afoot. Mr. Dark’s carnival comes equipped with a magical carousel that can age you, or, if you ride it backwards, make you younger. There is also a frightening mirror maze, and it’s a good idea to avoid the Dust Witch (Pam Grier).

Despite Something Wicked‘s spooky tone, at its heart is the tender father-son story of Will and his father Charles (beautifully played by Jason Robards), and it’s a film steeped in nostalgia. Set in the autumn, it is a perfect movie for the month of October.
