Asylum: Tricks and Treats

We meet a new patient at the asylum named Jeb. He appears to have something supernatural going on with him that we don’t learn more about until later, but it affects Sister Eunice. In the present, Leo and Teresa are still attempting to escape Bloody Face.

Speaking of the creepy serial killer star of this season, Bloody Face also strikes in the past on an unsuspecting victim. Plus, Lana gets further embroiled in the asylum under Sister Jude’s watchful and authoritative eye.

Consensus: This episode contains some of the creepiest and grisliest moments from the season. While it’s not all that “Halloween-y” (aside from a brief scene of kids trick-or-treating), it will succeed in freaking you out.

Tricks and Treats contains a startling electroshock therapy scene, the introduction of Jeb with a scene straight from The Exorcist, and several other horrific moments.

Coven: Fearful Pranks Ensue & Burn, Witch, Burn

The Halloween episodes during Coven are the season at its best. It’s time for Halloween and Kyle is struggling to fit in after Madison and Zoe resurrected him, leaving him severely mangled. But Kyle gets to blend in on tonight of all nights.

By the first episode’s end, the witches find their house surrounded by members of the dead who are walking free on an unholy evening. The second episode involves a witch throwdown and it’s incredibly fun to watch.

Consensus: Coven isn’t the scariest season of American Horror Story but it is easily one of the most entertaining. It contains some of the terrific campiness we’ve come to expect from the series as a whole but, particularly from this season.

Freak Show: Edward Mordrake Parts 1 & 2

The Edward Mordrake two-parter is all about the creepy legend concerning Edward Mordrake, a man who was rumored to have a second face in the back of his head. Mordrake supposedly went crazy and viciously murdered his entire circus troupe.

Mordrake officially arrives and takes Twisty the Clown’s spirit into his wicked posse, granting the clown some peace before someone new takes up his killer mantle.

Consensus: Freak Show is one of the most polarizing seasons of American Horror Story. But most people do agree it marked a quality decline in the series. It’s somewhat surprising that this is one of the stronger Halloween episodes and shows that despite its weak spots, Freak Show wasn’t all bad.
