A time traveler utilizing a smart phone was allegedly captured in a picture taken in 1943. Is this for real? We explore the possibility at 1428 Elm.

A time traveler was apparently “caught” using a cell phone in a picture from 1943 according to The Sun. Stuart Humphryes at BabelColour on Twitter posted the photograph of World War II workers having a bit of a holiday on a beach in Cornwall.

Sounds rather innocuous and if you have visited his feed before then you know that he routinely showcases a wide variety of historical footage from various decades. Since he couldn’t identify where the snapshot was taken, he asked his followers for help.

As it turns out, someone did identify the location as being Towan Beach in Newquay, Cornwall. But then, South London History chimed in with a close-up of a man in a rumpled brown suit with the observation that it appeared as if he was texting on a device.

This started quite the thread with people debating whether or not the man was Photoshopped into the scene. Several individuals noted that the “time traveler” looked out of place because he was fully clothed in a suit and everyone else was in attire more appropriate for that setting.

A gentleman by the name of Dr. Kevin Purcell concurred that this was definitive proof that time travel exists simply stating, “Finally, the evidence we need that time travel is real.” It is hard to tell whether or not he is being sarcastic.

In the past at 1428 Elm, we have covered many of these stories. Including one that dealt with an extra in the Charlie Chaplin movie, “The Circus,” looking as if she were talking on her cell while moving through a crowd.

There is always a plausible explanation for these candids. Although Chaplin’s footage requires repeated viewings because it looks convincing! To see what we are talking about click on this link.

The conclusion to this conundrum of the time traveler is that he is just rolling a cigarette which was not uncommon back in the day. Believe it or not…
