Fantasy Island trailer: The dark side of wish fulfillment
Blumhouse dropped the trailer for their upcoming film, Fantasy Island yesterday. Starring Michael Peña in the classic role of Mr. Roarke, made famous by Ricardo Montalbán, a new generation is introduced to the dark side of wish fulfillment.
Jason Blum, dropped the trailer for his company’s upcoming film, Fantasy Island on Twitter yesterday. This is not your parents’ version of the hit 1970’s Aaron Spelling production. While the backdrop of the lush, tropical island remains the same, the stories have a decidedly darker bent to them.
According to Deadline, this new adaptation will be hitting theaters on Valentine’s Day in 2020. Michael Peña, steps into Ricardo Montalbán’s shoes as the iconic, Mr. Rourke. In the TV series, Roarke was always a shadowy figure.
There was never an explanation of how he could make his clients’ fantasies into reality but somehow, we just accepted the fact that he could. Peña clad in the pre-requisite all white ensemble greets his guests with the familiar, “Welcome to Fantasy Island.” However, there is something in the way that he says it that isn’t quite…right.
Then there is Parisa Fitz-Henley who is assuming the Hervé Villechaize role of Roarke’s assistant. At first glance, when she is greeting the guests on the dock, she seems pleasant enough. However, when she tells one of the clients played by Maggie Q, “I hope you’re ready,” well, you just get chills down your spine.
This tropical paradise is chockfull of shadows. We begin to see that these fantasies are going to turn into nightmares. Especially when Melanie (Lucy Hale) comes face to face with her childhood bully in a scene that is right out of the Saw franchise.
In addition to Peña, Hale, Fitz-Henley and Maggie Q, Fantasy Island also stars Michael Rooker, Kim Coates, Portia Doubleday, Jimmy O. Yang and Ryan Hansen.
