10. Frankenweenie (1984)

As much as I love Frankenweenie (2012), I never took the time to watch the Tim Burton short that it was based on until I got Disney Plus. Frankenweenie (1984) stars Shelley Duvall (The Shining) and Daniel Stern (Home Alone) as Victor’s parents.

Burton’s reanimated tale pays homage to Mary Shelley’s literary classic, Frankenstein, but with a twist. After learning about electricity in science class, Victor uses his newfound knowledge to resurrect his beloved dog, Sparky.

Frankenweenie stays true to the universal monster aesthetic with its use of black and white film, and atmospheric music. Plus, Victor can be seen with a The Wolfman mug! I love a good reference when watching a film.

9. Frankenweenie (2012)

Frankenweenie (2012) doesn’t venture too far from its roots. Like the original, Frankenweenie follows a young boy on his journey of resurrecting Sparky. However, since the animated feature triples in film runtime, Frankenweenie (2012) includes more scenes and characters.

After resurrecting Sparky, Victor’s fellow classmates blackmail him into resurrecting their deceased pets. Mayhem soon ensues in New Holland. This plot point deters away from the original film and Mary  Shelley’s Frankenstein; giving the stop-motion animated film its own original path.

Familiar voices from other Tim Burton films appear in Frankenweenie. Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), and Martin Landau (Ed Wood) all star in this animated remake.
