2. The Invitation

The Invitation starts with a dinner party invitation, so we will call that close enough to Thanksgiving. Will has been invited to a dinner party by his ex-wife Eden and her husband David, and has decided to attend with his girlfriend Kira.

Will and Eden have a tragic past, having divorced after the death of their young son, and Eden met David at a grief support group. While it may seem strange to invite your ex to a party, other mutual friends have also been invited.

As the evening goes on, we find out that Eden and David are part of a new-agey group, and we experience Will’s memories of the death of his son, along with the aftermath. When Pruitt, a friend of David’s, shows up, we know that something is afoot, because he is played by John Caroll Lynch. Nobody does intensity like Lynch, and everything starts to go to hell in a hurry.

The Invitation debuted at the 2015 SXSW film festival before receiving a limited release. Its themes of grief and trauma make it a bit different from the usual “dinner party gone wrong” trope; it is tense, scary, and will keep you guessing until the stunning finale.
