4. Children of the Corn (1984)

Children of the Corn is a must-see for fans of the horror genre. This 1984 flick is based on a short story by Stephen King that was originally published in an issue of Penthouse, and later released in his collection, Night Shift.

Children of the Corn‘s setting is the fictional town Gatlin, Nebraska. Isaac, a child preacher, commands all of the children in Gatlin to murder everyone that is over the age of 18. Three years later, Burt Stanton and Vicky Baxter hit a child who staggers into the road. They then put the corpse into their car and attempt to find help. It doesn’t take long for the couple to realize that something is wrong in Gatlin, Nebraska.

This iconic flick includes two of my favorite horror movie concepts: creepy children and cults. Isaac and Malachi put so much fear into the other children of Gatlin. It’s this power that the two hold and their lack of remorse that truly makes them terrifying villains.

Also, that score? Absolutely magnificent. I definitely would include Children of the Corn on my top ten horror film soundtracks.

Of course, there’s the obvious reason as to why Children of the Corn makes a perfect Thanksgiving movie: the Autumn aesthetic. But I would also argue that there’s much more to this movie than what can be seen on the surface.

During this ordeal with the children of Gatlin, Burt and Vicky are trying to save their relationship. In an abandoned home, they discover Job and Sarah — the only two children who aren’t involved with the others. Once we reach the conclusion of this film, all four of them come together and create their own found family.
