The Happening: Mark Wahlberg

It’s no secret that Mark Wahlberg detests The Happening. As a matter of fact, he feels quite strongly about it and admits that it is terrible. Part of the problem lies with the tone of the film.

M. Night Shyamalan in an interview with IndieWire, explained that he envisioned his production to be “the best B-movie you will ever see.” He wanted viewers to connect with the humor of it which he compared to a farce like The Blob where it didn’t purport to be a serious film.

To the director’s credit, he admits that it was a misstep on his part and that he was inconsistent. How refreshing! Someone in Hollywood taking accountability for an idea that didn’t land and not blaming it on the audience.

There is no bad blood between the two men and Shyamalan feels that it is up to Wahlberg on how he wants to “interpret” The Happening. One of the scenes which clearly illustrates the director and the stars of his film struggling with the concept of this work being a farce is when Wahlberg’s character, Elliot Moore is trying to reassure an old lady that he isn’t going to kill her.

The way that he says, “What? Nooooo,” leads the audience to believe that yeah, something might happen to her in her sleep. To see what we mean, click on this link.

We had to chuckle upon re-watching that particular moment. The actor’s wide-eyed expression and his unconvincing delivery reminded us an awful lot of his performance in Seth MacFarlane’s hysterical 2012 comedy, Ted.
