The Hand: Michael Caine

Many famous directors started out in horror films. Coppola, Demme, Scorsese all of those heavy hitters got their start with B-movie mogul, Roger Corman. Would you be shocked to find out that Oliver Stone’s very first feature was a horror film called Seizure?

He wrote and directed the flick starring Jonathan Frid of Dark Shadows fame. It is about an author of horror novels who is terrorized by three characters from his books. Sounds like an interesting premise from the man who would later give us the award-winning Vietnam epic, Platoon.

Stone followed up Seizure with another film in the genre entitled, The Hand starring Michael Caine. The actor plays comic book artist, Jonathan Lansdale. While en route to his country home with his estranged wife, Lansdale has an argument with her while she is driving causing a bizarre accident to happen that leaves him without his drawing hand.

Depressed and unable to draw, he tries adjusting to life with a prosthetic appendage. Fortunately, he can maintain his standard of living because his editor wants him to continue writing the storyline for his popular superhero strip while another artist does his illustrations.

Blaming his wife for the accident and also for her perceived infidelity, his missing hand goes on a murderous rampage dispensing of all the people in Jonathan’s life that incur his wrath. This film gets maligned because of the ridiculousness of the plot and not for Caine’s acting.

While it is cited as being a horrible performance it is mostly due to the writing. However, we beg to differ and state that if you look at it as a B-movie, it is definitely a fun ride. Yes, it isn’t The Exorcist but who says horror can’t be a good time?

What are your thoughts on the list? Do you think these performances are the worst in the horror genre? Let us know in the comments.
