8. Mother! (2017)

Mother! is one of accomplished director Darren Aronofsky’s first new movies in several years. He promised it would sicken many people before its release, and when the film first screened, there were a lot of articles about people “walking out of the theater.” Every year there tends to be at least one horror movie that supposedly “sickens” the crowd. Usually, it’s just hype. However, the ending of Mother! was particularly brutal.

Jennifer Lawrence starred in one of her best and most controversial performances. She played a young woman trying to renovate her home. Unfortunately, her husband keeps getting in her way. Not only is he rude to her, but he also keeps allowing other people to traipse through their house and do whatever they want with it.

Eventually, things break out into all-out carnage. The woman gives birth to a baby, and her child is torn apart and devoured by the crowd. She is then hideously beaten by them in the aftermath. The entire film is a metaphor for the way humans treat earth (Mother Earth, etc.). The message was a major hit or miss with some.

7. Raw (2016)

Raw is another movie that allegedly made people vomit at film festivals. Mother! is viscerally appalling, but only for the ending scene. Raw does take disturbing imagery to another level, I’ll admit.

There is a scene where she pulls hair out of her throat that is so incredibly disgusting; I still can’t get it out of my head. The concept of Raw is unique too, and frankly, it’s a great film. It’s about a young woman who attends school to become a veterinarian. She considers herself vegetarian until she gets a taste of meat and slowly begins to crave human flesh.
