A reboot of The Grudge hit theaters this weekend, and audiences are not loving it. The movie received a rare ‘F’ grade from CinemaScore.

It’s officially January, and that typically means theaters will be full of movies that studios didn’t know what to do with. There’s a reason January is known for releasing bad films, and unfortunately, it looks like the Sam Raimi-produced reboot of The Grudge has fallen prey to the curse.

The latest version of the film scored an R-rating from the MPAA, which made many fans of the franchise happy. They were anticipating a gorefest, and although the film is said to be far more disturbing than its predecessors in some ways, it didn’t live up to the hype.

Critics panned The Grudge. It currently has a 16 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Generally, audiences enjoy movies more than critics do and tend to be more forgiving. That wasn’t the case this time. The Grudge received a rare ‘F’ grade from CinemaScore, which measures film appeal among moviegoers.

To put that into further perspective, only 20 films have managed to get an ‘F,’ with the last one being the 2017 film, Mother!

What do people think made the film so bad? Well, to be concise, most audiences thought it was boring. That’s one of the worst things horror can be. People can forgive bad and trashy horror movies easier than they can forgive boring ones. At least if a film is over-the-top, it’s still entertaining even if it’s not “good.”

Pacing problems plagued The Grudge, and many found the jump scares to be cheap and unoriginal.

However, some will be motivated to see the movie just because they’re curious to find out if it’s as bad as everyone is making it out to be. The recent box office bomb Cats underwent a similar phenomenon.

Not everyone thought it was terrible. One Twitter user commented, “Nah it was ok. An average horror movie. I wish they did a couple things different (no spoilers) but overall decent.”
