By Verona Jones
4. Dr. Jack Seward
Working with Zoe Van Helsing is Dr. Jack Seward (Matthew Beard), who, in the novels and movies, was an administrator for an insane asylum near Dracula’s first home. The property that Jonathan Harker sold Dracula way back in the first episode “The Rules of The Beast” called Carfax Abbey. He was also a member of “the group of Light” that fought Dracula. In this version, he is Zoe’s co-worker at the foundation.
We meet Dr. Seward at a party staring longingly at the young beautiful Lucy Wenstra, who is presently dancing with an American named Quincey Morris. Lucy isn’t interested in our lovelorn doctor and is making that point blatantly clear when she accepts Morris’ proposal. A very dejected Dr. Seward finally shows up at work, determined to put the beautiful Lucy out of his head.
3. Lucy Wenstra
Our beautiful Ms. Wenstra (Lydia West) is also a character from1897 in both the movies and the novel. She is Mina Murray’s best friend, whom Dracula uses to get closer to Mina. Lucy was so beautiful and sweet that Dr. Seward and Quincey Morris (Yes, he’s from 1897) both propose to her so smitten with her sweetness and purity.
Today’s Lucy is still lovely, but she wants to experience everything life has to offer. When the scene opened, Lucy states that as she is only 22-years-old, she wasn’t ready to be married. She’s not happy about the fact that her beauty attracts men to her, and because she’s beautiful, Lucy feels she always has to be perfect.
It is her dissatisfaction with life that draws Dracula to her. In her, he thinks he finally met his perfect partner because she isn’t afraid of death. Coming to her one night to complete the change, he advises her to change her last wishes to being buried instead of cremated. Lucy didn’t and was cremated as she wished and was reborn in a burned and hideous body. The lovesick Dr. Seward staked her, and now she is at peace.
