Young Frankenstein Live! coming to ABC this Fall
It’s official! Young Frankenstein will be the next musical adapted for TV. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming ABC production!
Horror enthusiasts, Frankenstein lovers, and Broadway fans rejoice! ABC will be adapting Young Frankenstein as their next live musical. The production will be produced by the show creator, Mel Brooks.
For those who do not know, the comedy classic film Young Frankenstein (1974) starring Gene Wilder was turned into a Broadway production back in 2007. It stayed on tour from November 8, 2007 to January 4, 2009. In October of 2017, a revised edition of the production went to London’s West End.
Mel Brooks wrote both the music and lyrics, while Susan Stroman directed and choreographed the performance. The New Mel Brooks Musical – Young Frankenstein was even nominated for three Tonys.
Deadline states that the live TV musical will include music from the stage adaption. So prepare for some “Transylvania Mania” on the small-screen! Other tunes that will most likely make their way into the production are “Puttin’ on the Ritz“, “Roll in the Hay” and “The Happiest Town in Town“.
Young Frankenstein is a spoof on the horror genre and takes a lot of its inspiration from the 1931 Universal Studio’s adaption of Mary Shelley’s novel. When asked if the production will be closer to the film or the Broadway musical, president Karey Burke said that it’ll be taking lessons from the musical and adapting it for a TV presentation.
Although cast and airdate haven’t been announced, Burke has stated that it will have a Fall debut, and she expects the story to attract top talent. This doesn’t come as any surprise as ABC’s latest musical event, The Little Mermaid Live starred Auli’i Cravalho, Queen Latifah, John Stamos, and Shaggy.
