5. The Shape of Water (2017)

Directed by Guillermo del Toro

Starring Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Doug Jones

You can always count on Guillermo del Toro to provide a wondrous and sensory-inducing experience at the movies. The director favors the cinematic experience and his most recent film, the Best Picture-winning Shape of Water, delivers in that aspect, as well as the romantic and even body horror aspects. Guillermo’s Black Lagoon inspired love story served as one of the most unusual Best Picture winners this past decade thanks to its blend of spellbinding romance and gory horror.

The film’s center romance involves a mute woman and a strange fish man kept in the government facility she works at as a janitor. Not exactly the most conventional love story and one that has had many accusations of glorifying bestiality. But Guillermo focuses on the love that can help break through oppressive forces and boundaries, making for a heartwarming story that also involves pus-filled fingers, slit throats, and more fair that only Guillermo can make look so aesthetically pleasing.

It’s a perfect mixture of horror and romance to set your date night straight!
