4. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Directed by Edgar Wright

Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Kate Ashfield

Back to that zombie comedy I hinted at during the Warm Bodies slide and honestly, who didn’t see this coming?

Edgar Wright himself has stated that his breakthrough horror-comedy, Shaun of the Dead, is a romantic comedy set in the zombie apocalypse and that is exactly what we’re dealing with here. The zombies are integral to the plot of course, but the story’s main focus is Shaun’s sorry excuse of a love life falling apart and slowly being rebuilt over the course of the film’s blood-soaked runtime.

Shaun is not romantic in the slightest, preferring to drink at their local pub over anything else, but when a nasty breakup and the zombie apocalypse knock his world over, it’s time for him to grow up and become the adult he’s meant to be…if he doesn’t get eaten first.

Horror hounds have quoted it endlessly, it has lived on through memes, pop culture references, and the growing popularity of Edgar Wright since then. It’s honestly just a go-to movie in general and with your partner, I’d even say it’s a necessary watch, if you can get past the zombies.
