1. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Directed by Tim Burton

Starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, and Sacha Baron Cohen

Sweeney Todd is both an absolute delight and arguably a quintessential date movie in every way. A lush production, sweeping musical numbers, a dark and edgy tone, and of course Tim Burton’s usual bag of tricks to make this musical adaptation a true winner.

I’m sure we all know the story now: Sweeney Todd is a talented barber who returns to London after exile to find that his wife was raped by Judge Turpin, who now holds custody of his daughter after her mother’s death. With his special friends (his blades), he’s hungry for vengeance as he slaughters the customers of his new barber shop, with the ultimate goal of Judge Turpin in mind.

Sure, Depp’s vocal performance may lack the power of the Broadway special, but as far as the film’s own merits are concerned, this tale of vengeance and toxic love is both horrifying and completely fitting for a Valentine’s Day movie night. It may just the best, as a matter of fact.
