13. The Skin I Live In (2011)

Directed by Pedro Almodovar

Starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, and Jan Cornet

Now here’s a “love” story guaranteed to get some kind of reaction from you, no matter what.

Pedro Almodovar is a Spanish director who has always been known for his provocative and, to put it lightly, horny movies, freely expressing himself as a filmmaker who grew up during an oppressive time in Spain. For this film, Almodovar reunites with Antonio Banderas, a regular for him until Antonio’s big break in Hollywood, and the results are a unique blend of romance, melodrama, dark comedy, and disturbing psychological thriller.

In it, Antonio Banderas plays a successful surgeon who has a mysterious woman locked in his house, monitored 24/7 by his live-in maid. We don’t really know why he’s keeping her locked up, but that’s just part of the fun in this dangerous thriller about perception, sexuality, and vengeance.

I’m being vague, but know that The Skin I Live In is the kind of twisty and pulpy thriller-horror that not only gets better on rewatches, but could serve as an interesting choice for a date night, if you can get past the subtitles, that is.
