9. Antichrist (2009)

Directed by Lars von Trier

Starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg

Now that we’ve already covered some fun and satisfying romantic horror movies, let’s pivot and talk about something that is literally the opposite of fun and satisfying.

For anybody who knows about Lars von Trier, you’ll know that his movies, though fun and tongue-in-cheek at times, can mostly be dour and unpleasant. Lars isn’t afraid to completely forget about the audience and tell the stories in his own way and Antichrist is not only one of the best examples of that, but a strong example of a romantic horror film that’s NOT meant to make you feel all that great by the end.

The story centers on an unnamed couple who, after losing their baby from a falling accident, relocate to a cabin in the woods to recover when they both start to experience…strange things in the house. It’s not a happy watch, but Lars von Trier’s top-tier presentation and the beautiful way he directs this insanely depressing story is something to behold. Though the romance in the film is far from healthy, the film carries this oddly romantic tone that only intensifies at the movie goes on.

You and your partner may feel like crap after watching it, but I can’t deny that it’s an experience worth visiting at least once.
