9. Marie Laveau

Angela Bassett’s first role on American Horror Story is also one of her most notable and best characters in the series. She entered the scene during season three, Coven, and played the legendary New Orleans Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau. Watching Bassett play the opposite of Jessica Lange’s character, Fiona Goode, is just excellent television.

8. Nell Crain

It was hard to choose between the many fantastic women presented in Netflix’s Haunting of Hill House, Olivia and Theo Crain were also in contention, but ultimately we went with Nell because she is the eponymous Bent-Neck Lady.

That episode of is a fantastic hour of television. The grand reveal of who the Bent-Neck Lady is and the surprising twist was like a sucker punch, and it was helped along by a stirring performance from Victoria Pedretti.

7. Sister Jude

Jessica Lange is another sublime actress who rocked everyone’s world during her tenure on American Horror Story. Trying to pick just one of her characters was difficult, but we ultimately decided that Sister Jude was her standout performance.

Sure, Constance Langdon was a close second, followed swiftly by Fiona Goode, but she was so deliciously wicked as Sister Jude, and Asylum is often regarded as one of the show’s best seasons.
