The Most Dangerous Animal of All: Son of the Zodiac Killer
The Most Dangerous Animal of All explores a man’s quest to find out if he is the son of the Zodiac Killer, one of the most notorious serial murderers in American history.
The Most Dangerous Animal of All, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is FX’s first foray into the documentary scene. Based on a 2014 book written by Gary Stewart and Susan Mustafa, the mini-series chronicles Stewart’s efforts to prove that his biological father, Earl Van Best, Jr. was the notorious Zodiac Killer.
As everyone knows, the elusive serial murderer who taunted police with his cryptic missives has never been identified. However, not for lack of trying. In 2009, The Orange County Register reported that Deborah Perez claimed that her father, Guy Ward Hendrickson was the Zodiac based on a pair of glasses that Perez said he stole from one of his victim’s named Paul Stine.
Kevin Jones of the San Francisco Police Department and the point person for the Zodiac case, ruled out Hendrickson as a candidate for the serial killer. Stating that the spectacles did not belong to Stine.
Gary Stewart on the other hand, firmly believes that his father Earl was the culprit. Best first made news for statutory rape when he married 14-year-old Judy Chandler, Stewart’s birth mother. Then came a succession of crimes ranging from DUIs, fraud and pedophilia. Earl later abandoned Gary and his mother in Louisiana and Stewart was put up for adoption.
Why did Gary believe he was the son of the Zodiac Killer? It all started one night when he was watching television and he saw a sketch of the murderer which reminded him of a photo that he saw of his biological father.
According to the trailer for the mini-series, Stewart was able to find his father’s name amidst one of his cryptic letters to law enforcement. Which Zodiac claimed would contain his identity if the police were smart enough to decode.
Does Gary prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the Zodiac killer’s son? That remains to be seen.
