Netflix’s new film The Platform is based on a vertical prison system where inmates can only eat the food left over by those above them — sounds terrifying.
Prisoners are fed by eating the leftover food passed down from the level above them. That means, if you’re on the top floor, you might as well eat like a king. But if you’re on the bottommost level, you may die of starvation.
The Platform calls to mind the recent award-winning movie, Parasite, and will clearly examine some similar class differences. Some interesting moments in the trailer include a quote about how if people only ate what they needed, there would be plenty of food left for the bottom.

But the level on top, who gets food from what appears to be a giant feast-like setting, don’t care whatsoever about those below them. They’re greedy and they eat whatever they like, not caring if everyone else starves.
Everything about the production design of the movie looks incredibly chilling. The trailer shows how the prisoners are literally on levels with a giant square hole in the center so the people who control the prison can lower the table of food lower and lower. It also looks like they transport prisoners to lower levels, perhaps if they do something wrong?
I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie contained some cannibalism, the trailer definitely hints at extremely dark subject material and the gritty dark cinematography tells me this is going to be a horror film that fans shouldn’t miss.
