David Arquette has joined the cast of Spyglass Media’s, Scream 5. So, what can possibly happen with his character?
David Arquette will be reprising his fan favorite role of Dewey Riley in Scream 5 according to Deadline. Meanwhile, his co-star, Neve Campbell is still in “talks” to portray Sidney Prescott in the upcoming installment of the Wes Craven franchise.
Apparently, the producers have also reached out to former cast members to appear in the reboot. Matthew Lillard has also said that he would love to come back but only if it made sense. For Stu to be resurrected (literally) it would almost have to be in a dream sequence of some sort with him as an adult since he was killed by Sidney in the original film.
What we do know is that production is scheduled to begin later this year in Wilmington, North Carolina. Of course, this can only happen if COVID-19 safety guidelines are in place.
As for the plot of Scream 5, its anyone’s guess but it will be penned by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not). In looking at both of their bodies of work, this effort might have the potential to skew a little darker but will also maintain the proper balance of humor.
So, what’s in store for Dewey? He has already stared death in the face several times during the various Scream incarnations. We know that he was married to Gale and had been promoted to Sheriff.
There have been several suggestions for Scream 5 from fans and other sources. Rose McGowan felt that Tatum could have had a twin who wanted to avenge her sister’s death. While some want Sidney to become Ghostface.
Everyone knows Gale was struggling with life in Woodsboro. Maybe she is given the opportunity to host a show on an ID Channel like network, now that she has become an author and an expert so to speak on serial killers.
Perhaps, Dewey decides that he wants to get a job in another Sheriff’s department where Gale will be based. While they are in the process of moving, murders start happening again and he has to train his replacement (think Se7en with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt).
Another route and this may not be popular would be to have him be killed in the line of duty. In order to reinvigorate the franchise, it is time to bring in new faces. Arquette, Campbell and the other actors aren’t getting any younger. Scream 5 might be a way for the old favorites to hand the torch over to the next crew.
Until Scream 5 hits theaters, you can revisit the franchise with David Arquette, Neve Campbell and the rest of the gang on VUDU, YouTube, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime and Hulu.
