Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, set the precedent for blockbuster superhero movies. However, Spider-Man 2 could have been decidedly darker with David Koepp’s original script.

Sam Raimi was the perfect choice to helm Spider-Man. His 1990 effort, Darkman had that comic book sensibility to it. So, it was no surprise when the Web Slinger raked in the cash at the box office.

Of course, when a film is successful, the pressure to have a sequel usually comes into play. David Koepp, who gave us such hits as Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible prior to Spidey had an idea for Spider-Man 2.

According to Cracked, if Koepp’s script would have been used, it would have definitely had a darker bent. Even the title would have been different. Instead of Spider-Man 2, it would have been Amazing Spider-Man.

Other revelations courtesy of David Koepp’s script archive (which can be found at this link), Peter Parker’s parents were employed by the government. Instead of dying in a plane crash, they were murdered by their colleague, Otto Octavius a.k.a. Doc Ock.

Koepp would have introduced Gwen Stacy in the second installment in the franchise along with her father, Captain Stacy. Unfortunately, he would fall victim to Ock while trying to save a child from the devious villain’s clutches. When Spidey tries to rescue him, everyone thinks he is the killer.

Perhaps the saddest development would have been Gwen’s death. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see these ideas come to fruition because obviously negotiations didn’t work out for the screenwriter to return to the franchise.
