One of our favorite adaptations of King’s work, The Dead Zone is included in this array. The underappreciated David Cronenberg directed classic is hardly ever mentioned on “Best of” lists. Considering the subject matter, it might be extremely prescient in these modern times.
Released in 1983, the film stars the incredible Christopher Walken as mild-mannered teacher, Johnny Smith. After a horrible car accident leaves him in a coma for several years, he awakens to a decidedly different world. One where the love of his life, Sarah Bracknell (Brooke Adams) has moved on and is now married with a child.
As if this heartbreak wasn’t enough, he finds out that he has acquired a psychic ability, specifically psychometry. All he needs to do is touch a person or object and he can immediately get a glimpse into the future.
At first, this is a curse more than a blessing. He has also had the misfortune of contending with an upcoming presidential race where the popular candidate Greg Stillson (Martin Sheen) has a dark secret.
When Johnny shakes his hand at a political rally, he sees a flash of an ominous event in the future. Stillson is mentally unstable and will start a nuclear war. Armed with this knowledge, Johnny makes a decision to stop the candidate’s rise to power by whatever means necessary.
In addition to this fine film, the Stephen King 5-Movie Collection offers the terrifying Silver Bullet, the original Pet Sematary (1989) and the 2019 remake along with the Mick Garris directed The Stand.
