For years filmmaker and Baltimore’s favorite son, John Waters has always marched to the beat of his own drum. His design for the New York Film Festival poster showcases his irreverent humor and iconoclastic style.
First, if you aren’t familiar with John Waters, close this article and spend your hard earned money consuming his films right now! For the rest of you perverts, we have exciting news from Deadline about the director’s retro take on the New York Film Festival poster.
In true Waters’ fashion, his quirky view of the celebrated event elevates what could have been a routine advertisement for the NYFF into a work of art. The pop culture icon joins the impressive roster of previous poster designers of which the legendary, Andy Warhol was a member.
Believe it or not, the “Pope of Trash” has never had a film shown at the renowned festival. However, in our opinion, we think his poster almost overshadows the content of this year’s list of talent.
Utilizing a style that pays tribute to rock and roll concert and event posters of the past, Waters includes his own eccentric brand of humor turning this promotional effort into a piece that you would be proud to hang on your wall at home.
NYFF kicks off on Sept. 17 and ends on Oct. 11. This year looks completely different than previous versions. Most screenings will be held at drive-in locations or virtually as we keep the festival spirit alive during the COVID-19 times. To purchase tickets, click on this link.
