We’re in the midst of a ghost-movie renaissance. In the upcoming horror Mammon, the spiritual menace stems from a unique source.

Horror has been in the midst of a ghost-story renaissance for the better part of a decade. While James Wan’s The Conjuring led to a string of spin-offs and subpar rip-offs, it hasn’t stopped the momentum of the spirit-chasing machine. However, it would be nice to have some innovation thrown in among the same-old, same-old. The upcoming horror Mammon might fill that creative void.

It’s one thing to bring the Warrens or a new generation of Ghostbusters in to purge some ectoplasmic menace, but what happens when the spectral villain is spawned by…capitalism?

Maybe Deadline‘s synopsis can explain it better:

"“The movie…follows a struggling young couple who are chasing the American dream, and soon realize that their worst nightmare is the demonic spirit in their new home. Mammon is the biblical word for the worship of wealth, and the couple discover that getting rich can come at a hefty price.”"

Given the trajectory of current events, Mammon might be a timely parable in a Twilight Zone vein. In light of the pandemic, many are facing frightening real-world circumstances that have made financial stability a terrifying unknown. If this can tap into that sense of vulnerability, it may be scary enough without the demonic presence.

The film, directed and co-written by feature first-timer Isaac Walsh, has a solid cast featuring Mickey Rourke, Taye Diggs, and Jessica Uberuaga, among others.

Rourke, who won an Oscar nomination for his role in The Wrestler, has also appeared in a myriad of genre fare over his decades-long career. The horror-Noir Angel Heart is one of his standout performances. Diggs starred in the Dark Castle remake of House on Haunted Hill, which is Halloween viewing as perfect as its Vincent Price-starring predecessor. And Uberuaga was recently seen in the underrated John Travolta thriller, The Fanatic.

Next. The Conjuring Universe. dark

Mammon is in pre-production and will commence shooting next month.
